Aim: To examine the beliefs and techniques of Motivational Interviewing and assess their usefulness in a range of client work situations.
Learner Outcomes. By the end of the course participants will:
Understand the roots and assumptions of Motivational Interviewing and its links to the Cycle of Change
Be aware of the role of ambivalence in motivation and decision-making
Have practiced framing questions to encourage “self-motivational statements” from clients
Have assessed techniques for working with resistance, and motivating through skilfully building discrepancy between stated goals and current actions
